This weekend, I had the pleasure of experiencing my first-ever homecoming at Sacramento State, and let me tel you, it was one for the books. I pulled up to the tailgate and the energy was already on 100. Everywhere I turned, there were grills going, laughs flowing and the smell of ribs in the air. (Yes, I definitely had a plate.)
The tailgare was more than just a pregame, it was a cultural celebration. Sac State is a very diverse university and there was all types of representation. Black Greek life showed up, bringing that signature energy, unity, and tradition that makes HBCU-style tailgating unforgettable, even at PWI like Sac State. I ran into alumni, former players, community leaders and Sac State pride from all eras. The love was real.
The Hornets took on Northen Colorado in what turned out to be a high-scoring, edge-of-your-seat showdown. With 20,000 fans packing the stands, the atmosphere was electric. Sac State held on to take a stunning 40-35 victory and when the final whistle blew?
The fans stormed the field. It was chaos, it was joy-it was college football magic.
Throughout the night, I had the chance to connect with some incredible people, including Sacramento State President Luke Wood. We chopped it up about community, culture and power of homecoming bringing everbody together. I also got to rub elbows with Sac State royalty, Sacramento royalty-leaders, legends abd change-makers all in one space.
As if the day couldn’t get any more epic, Lil Yachts hit the stage post-game to shut it down. A live performance right there at Hornet Stadium, with fans still buzzing from the win? Prefect ending.
This wasn’t just a game. It was a celebration of Sacramento spirit and Hornet pride. A huge shoutout to everyone who made it an unforgettable night.
Coach Goody’s first Sac State Homecoming was a certified classic. And trust me, it wont be my last.
